OTOY and Autodesk to Create Next Generation Cloud Rendering Platform

OTOY’s Academy Award®-winning technology to transform the way films and video games are made.

LOS ANGELES — (BUSINESS WIRE) — October 20, 2011 — OTOY Inc. today announced that it is partnering with Autodesk, Inc., a world leader in 3D design, engineering and entertainment software, to usher in the next generation of tools for filmmaking, 3D design and video game development.

Autodesk has invested an undisclosed amount to accelerate OTOY’s technology and development roadmap, and the companies’ partnership will enable continuous integration of OTOY’s technology across Autodesk’s portfolio of software and services.

“We are pleased to be working with OTOY based on their strong track record with rendering, capture, compression and GPGPU technologies,” said Brian Mathews, vice president of Autodesk Labs. “Our investment marks the next significant step in Autodesk’s efforts to advance rendering, cloud, and compression technologies for use in a variety of industries.”

Real Time Path Tracing in the Viewport - A New Level of Photorealism

OTOY’s 3D rendering tools, including Octane Render™ and Brigade™, are the premier rendering solutions for next generation ‘path traced’ games and films.

Path tracing significantly reduces the cost and complexity of high quality rendering by automatically generating effects traditionally handled through manual post processing – including spectral rainbows, lens flares, unbiased motion blur and depth of field.

“A year ago, path tracing was considered too expensive to be used even in high-end Hollywood blockbusters. Today, thanks to advances in GPU rendering, OTOY is bringing real time path-tracing technology to millions of artists by leveraging GPU hardware that costs only a few hundred dollars. This is a game-changer on any budget,” said Jules Urbach, CEO of OTOY.

“Autodesk is the leader in 3D design software for film and video game production. We are incredibly excited about our partnership and proud to be bringing their industry leading tools to an ever-expanding market through our cloud solutions,” said Alissa Grainger, President of OTOY.

LightStage™- Next Generation Capture Technology

OTOY’s Academy Award® winning LightStage™ technology captures humans, objects and environments with absolute fidelity. It has been used in dozens of films, including Avatar and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

OTOY’s rendering software uses a physically correct material framework and capture system which incorporates LightStage™ directly into the rendering pipeline.

Mesh Streaming – Cloud Computing Powered by End Users

OTOY’s mesh streaming turns any desktop computer into a cloud server, enabling users to access the applications they own from any device, including iOS and Android tablets.

OTOY’s Enterprise Mesh platform enables organizations to deploy their own private render cloud servers, and leverage incredible remote rendering power. OTOY’s Enterprise Mesh platform remotely renders virtualized instances of high-end 3D software across an entire office or campus using inexpensive commodity server hardware. Each remote virtual machine instance supports DirectX 11 3D hardware acceleration. Multiple virtualized Windows 7 desktops can be concurrently streamed from a single video card, each with resolutions up to 7680x3200 at 60 Hz.

ORBX™– Compression and Streaming Technology for 3D Rendering in the Cloud

ORBX™ is a high speed compression technology powered by GPUs. It encodes data that traditional video codecs can’t handle, such as 3D meshes, light fields, HDR video (up to 24 bits per channel), depth map sensor streams, voxels, point clouds, and plenoptic data sets.

WebCL™ – High Performance GPU Compiler Tools and Developer SDK

OTOY technology partners and registered 3rd party developers can create their own tools and applications on top of OTOY’s cloud rendering and streaming solutions using either JavaScript or C/C++.

By leveraging OTOY’s WebCL™ compiler and high performance GPGPU libraries, developers can further extend the OTOY ecosystem through cross platform GPU kernels that run at optimal speed on both NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards supporting OpenCL 1.1.
