AIA Helps Spearhead the Search for the Next Architect of the Capitol

WASHINGTON – May 23, 2023 - The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) search process is now officially underway, and AIA is working to support a licensed architect as the next candidate for the AOC position. AIA representatives are working closely with key congressional offices and the executive search firm hired by Congress to manage the recruitment for this position. AIA is also promoting the opportunity to AIA Members to directly express their interest in the position.

"The Architect of the Capitol serves a crucial role in preserving both the history and the functionality of the Capitol complex,” said AIA Executive Vice President and CEO Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE. "We are proud to have an active advisory role in the selection of an experienced licensed architect for this critical position. Our goal is to help find the best candidate who possesses the skills and attributes to successfully execute this prestigious role."

The AOC position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, development, and preservation of the United States Capitol Complex. The AOC is appointed to a 10-year term by the President of the United States, confirmed by the United States Senate, and is accountable to the President of the U.S and Congress.

The role of the Architect of the Capitol is a prestigious and vital position that wields influence over the Capitol campus operations and design. The AOC is responsible for leading and managing a vast portfolio, with over 2,000 employees and 18.4 million square feet of facility space, along with 570 acres of grounds and many works of treasured art.
