PartWorks Helps Movie Industry Cut Costs with Rapid Design and Production of Props

New Digital Manufacturing Service Combines 3D Scanning, 3D Modeling and 3D Printing Technology with Quick-Turn Prop, Set-Piece and Costume Production

ATLANTA, Dec. 9, 2015 — (PRNewswire) —   PartWorks, a rapid digital manufacturer of low volume metal and plastic parts, announces its Industrial Concierge™ service for designing, prototyping and manufacturing props for the movie industry. With this new service for 3D scanning and reverse engineering, 3D CAD design, 3D Printing, reproduction and manufacturing of metal and plastic parts, the company helps filmmakers meet tight deadlines while controlling costs.

"3D printing is dramatically changing the motion picture, home video and television industry. PartWorks is uniquely positioned to provide a one-stop digital manufacturing solution that studios and production houses can rely on to quickly and efficiently bring fantasy closer to reality," said Scott Geller, CEO of PartWorks,  "In a business where each prop is custom and can be quite extraordinary, our customers demand quick, reliable response and premium service. Our unique combination of custom part design and production services dramatically reduces turn-around time and lowers the risk of involving multiple partners.

Special effects studios, filmmakers, Broadway shows and production and prop houses are using PartWorks services for some of their most demanding, highly engineered projects. For instance, Cine Stables, a PartWorks customer, needed a reproduction of an intricately carved tombstone to be featured in the recent History Channel movie Roanoke – Search for the Lost Colony.  "PartWorks not only helped us produce an amazingly accurate reproduction, but they completed the job with astonishing speed," remarked Michael Johnson.

Instead of a traditional, artistically hand-made prop, the tombstone Cine Stables needed had to be a precise reproduction to capture extensive carvings on both sides. Johnson was inspired to try state-of-the-art 3D scanning and 3D printing to meet the challenge. "I called PartWorks, who traveled to the Brenau University library where it was housed within a week, performed a 3D scan, and created a 3D model that we were able to have 3D printed by PartWorks partner CloudDDM and painted by our art department.  The reproduction was so precise and realistic, the Director featured the replica in several close-up shots," remarked Mr. Johnson.

Studios and special effects experts are now able to utilize digital manufacturing to produce everything from concept models to scaled and full-size props, set-pieces, and even portions of costumes. PartWorks provides a unique service that encompasses both design and sourcing -- streamlining the process and producing quality props in record time, ultimately supporting the business and the art of filmmaking.

In addition to movie production, PartWorks serves companies in industries ranging from aerospace, automotive and energy to industrial and medical. The company has developed relationships with leading global plastic and metal manufacturers in virtually every category, including:  3D printingCNC machiningplastic injection molding, investment casting, plastic and metal extrusion, metal stamping, and  precision sheet metal and fabrication.
