Bentley’s Dr. Thomas Walski Honored by Water & Wastes Digest

Publication’s 50th Anniversary Special Edition Recognizes Individuals Who Have Shaped the Water and Wastewater Industry

EXTON, Pa. – Nov. 30, 2011 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for sustaining infrastructure, today announced that Water & Wastes Digest has honored Dr. Thomas Walski, P.E., Bentley senior product manager for water distribution and sewer modeling software products. The publication recognized Dr. Walski in its 50th Anniversary Special Edition 1961-2011 as an industry icon and leader for his many significant contributions to the field of hydraulic modeling and analysis.

As the article in Water & Wastes Digest states, “Dr. Walski, co-holder of three patents in the area of hydraulic analysis, has been called the father of commercial water distribution modeling. His research has resulted in significant savings in water loss, energy, project hours, and design costs.”

“I want to thank Water & Wastes Digest for this acknowledgement,” said Dr. Walski. “It is an honor to be counted among the individuals recognized, whose work in preserving our world’s water resources I greatly admire.”

At Bentley, Dr. Walski has been at the forefront of numerous state-of-the-art technology software achievements in hydraulics and hydrology, including the company’s recently released Pipe Renewal Planner module for WaterGEMS and WaterCAD. Pipe Renewal Planner is a decision support tool that provides water utility owner-operators with quantifiable and reproducible best practices for optimizing the replacement and rehabilitation of distribution network pipes. Dr. Walski explained, “By ranking the worst-performing pipes based on their year of installation, materials of construction, pipe break history, and hydraulic performance under various constraints, Pipe Renewal Planner helps engineers identify pipes that should be considered for renewal. This helps ensure long-term system reliability by decreasing pipe breaks, leakage, lost revenues, and outages.”

Dr. Walski’s achievements throughout his distinguished academic and industry career also include authoring and co-authoring more than 75 peer-reviewed journal papers and technical notes and 140 conference papers. He is also the author or contributing author of more than 25 reference books.
