NIBS: Live August 3: White House to Stream Forum on Smart Finance for Disaster Resilience

Institute to Join Discussion on Incentivization

Aug 2, 2016 -- The National Institute of Building Sciences will participate in the White House Forum on Smart Finance for Disaster Resilience, to be held tomorrow, August 3, in Washington, D.C. The introductory portion of the event will be streamed live by the White House from 8:30 am to 10:30 am ET.

The White House Council on Environmental Quality is hosting this forum on innovative finance options to support pre-disaster mitigation and community resilience. The convening is an opportunity for White House and Administration officials to learn about new investment approaches and incentive programs that are being deployed in communities now, and to explore partnerships and opportunities to leverage additional resources in the future.

These new approaches build on many of the concepts covered in the National Institute of Building Sciences paper, Developing Pre-Disaster Resilience Based on Public and Private Incentivization, developed by the Institute’s Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC) and Council on Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (CFIRE).

Institute President Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA; Institute Presidential Advisor Ryan M. Colker, J.D.; MMC Chair Kevin Mickey, GISP; MMC Immediate Past Chair Neil C. Blais; and MMC Program Director Philip Schneider, AIA will join in the discussion.

The event will include representatives from federal, state and local government; mortgage and insurance representatives; codes and standards developers; and others interested in promoting mitigation.

The White House Forum on Smart Finance for Disaster Resilience continues the Obama Administration’s commitment to advancing community and national resilience. It is a follow up to the White House Conference on Resilient Building Codes, held May 10, which focused on the role codes and standards play in achieving a resilient nation. The Institute served as a liaison between the White House and the building industry leading up to that event.

The live stream of the White House Forum on Smart Finance for Disaster Resilience begins tomorrow, Wednesday, August 3, at 8:30 ET. Click on the link to view the proceedings.
