SKY5000 Dual Card Reader Chip from Synic Solution is based on Cortus APS23

Korean secure access specialist Synic Solution launched an innovative, cost-effective, new generation card reader chip using a Cortus APS23 32-bit processor core.

Montpellier, France and Bundang, Korea - Synic Solution, a specialist in secure access and Cortus, a technology leader in low power, silicon efficient, 32-bit processor IP, announced that the Synic SKY5000 integrated Dual Card Reader solution uses a Cortus APS23 core to enable the flexible implementation of user applications. The SKY5000 is the first product to go into production based on the Cortus v2 instruction set announced in October 2014.

The Synic SKY5000 is fully compliant with the EMV4.1 standard for secure payment transactions and the ISO-7816 standard for smartcards with contacts and supports Class A/B/C supplies with an external 5V power input. By integrating a low dropout (LDO) regulator for the core and I/O as well as an internal clock generator, the SKY5000 provides a cost-effective solution for card readers without an external clock source. The chip supports a variety of external host interfaces including USB, UART, SPI & I2C. The chip includes a number of security features including tamper detection and an internal secured NVRAM for encryption key values.

Cortus licenses a range of low power 32-bit processor cores for intelligent connected devices. With growing numbers of controllers in solar energy and industrial control requiring floating point algorithms, many applications require floating point operations executed in hardware to achieve their performance goals. Complex matrix inversion is a challenging computation in MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) wireless systems due to challenges around precision, quantisation and scaling which can be mitigated by using floating point.

“The Cortus APS23 provides us with good processing performance combined with a small silicon footprint”, says Y.C. Choi Chief Technology Officer of Synic Solution, “In addition, the core has very low power consumption”. He adds, “We have been pleased to work locally with the support of the Cortus Korea office”.

“We are delighted that Synic Solution have chosen a Cortus core for their innovative Smart Card reader solution and that the SK5000 is the first chip to be manufactured containing an APS23”, says Michael Chapman President & CEO of Cortus. “This adds to Cortus' strong record in smartcard applications including SIM card chips, e-Passport chips and PayTV cards”

The Cortus family of APS processors offers a wide choice of computational performance and system complexity for embedded SoCs. All cores interface to Cortus' peripherals including Ethernet 10/100 MAC, USB 2.0 Device and USB 2.0 OTG. They also share the simple vectored interrupt structure which ensures rapid, real time interrupt response, with low software overhead.

The APS tool chain and IDE (for C and C++) is available to licensees free of charge, and can be customised and branded for final customer use. Ports of various RTOSs are available such as FreeRTOS™, Micrium μC/OSII™, Micrium μC/OSIII® & TargetOS™.

To date well over 800 million devices have been manufactured containing Cortus processor cores.
